Aggudey is still a member – CPP Chairman

By William Yaw Owusu

Monday January 7, 2008
Nadi Nylander, the new Chairman of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) says as far as the party’s executives are concerned George Opeisika Aggudey, a Presidential aspirant at the party’s recent congress remains a member of the party.

This is in spite of fresh allegations that some aggrieved supporters of Mr. Aggudey on Wednesday stormed the party’s headquarters in Accra to take away items that he donated to the party.

The items included a refrigerator, television set as well as chairs.

In an interview after the inauguration of the party’s national executives in Accra on Friday, Mr. Nylander said “we are aware that some people came for the items on behalf of Mr. Aggudey. We also understand they acted on his behalf”.

“We have no quarrel with him. He is still a member of the CPP. He is welcome if he chooses to bring the items back”.

At the press conference Mr. Nylander said “we have a great task to mobilize the people to vote for the CPP and will not allow anybody to divide us”
He said the new CPP is not seeking to engage success of the past but will rather work hard to convince the electorate that the party is the only hope for Ghana.

He commended all those who had remained resolute to get the party to its current level adding “the new CPP is now attracting sympathizers from home and abroad”.

Ivor Greenstreet, General Secretary of the party said “we will strategize to make the CPP the preferred party for the people”.

He said “we will engage in a campaign of ideas to prove that the ‘golden age of business’ lies in a CPP government”.

In attendance were the four other presidential aspirants excluding Mr. Aggudey and other top party members who took turns to pledge their support for Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom, the CPP flagbearer, to become the next President.

When Dr. Nduom took his turn he said “I am not in the Presidential race to support an NPP or NDC candidate. I am in it to win and go to the Flagstaff House”.

“I will make the CPP proud in the 2008 election and I will do this with the involvement of every CPP sympathizer”.

He debunked assertion by some section of the public that the CPP is anti-business saying “a CPP led government will ensure that the private sector gets direct support to ensure economic growth”.

“A CPP government has done this before and we will prove to all that we are not a third force in the political landscape of the country”.

Dr. Nduom said he is ready to debate other Presidential aspirants adding “I will give the electorate the reason to vote the CPP back to power”.

Mr. Kosi Dede the facilitator of the programme and a CPP leading member said the party after the December 16, 2007 congress in Kumasi resolved to work to overcome the internal problems that led to the break up of the rank and file of the party after the previous congress and stay united.
